Text for free

While I have a PDA phone capable of pretty much anything, I haven’t signed up for a text messaging plan because frankly I don’t text much. However there are times when sending a text message is the most convenient way to communicate. Here are a few ways you can do it for free, at least free for you. Remember that the standard text messaging rates apply to your recipient.

  • Teleflip Flipout – my personal favorite
This allows you to use your email (in my case Yahoo Mail) to send text messages. First you have to register. Once your registration is confirmed (you get an email and click on a link to confirm), you can send an email addressed to your-friend-mobile-phone-number@teleflip.com and they will get your email as a text on their phone. When they reply to you via a text, you will receive an email, cool huh! All this and you don’t even need to know your friend’s mobile carrier. I know this works for US mobile carriers but not sure about outside US.

Bonus tip: if you are a Verizon Wireless customer, you can accomplish the same task by sending an email to your-friend-mobile-phone-number@vtext.com. This obviates the need to register for Flipout.
  • Yahoo Mail (the new format, not the classic version)
First make sure you have entered the mobile number for your contacts. To text from Yahoo Mail, you have to first sign into Yahoo Mail, then sign into chat, click on Contacts, select the contact, and click on their mobile phone icon next to their phone number. A text chat session will be initiated where your chat messages are sent as text messages to their phone and their replies are seen in your chat session.
  • Yahoo Messenger 8
You can find the instructions on how to send text messages here.

Enjoy.
